The Committee to Defend the Panther 21 was formed in early 1970 to raise money to defend the twenty-one Black Panthers who had been accused of conspiracy to murder New York policemen. The name of the newspaper was a reference to the paper's opposite ideology to that of the Wall Street Journal. These broadsides were primarily distributed at Columbia University during the strikes of 1970.
